Chapman University partners with OC schools in $750K science grant

March 2006 - Chapman University will be the lead institution of higher education in the newly awarded California Science-Math Partnership (CaMSP) grant to Centralia and six other local elementary school districts.  Targeting the physical science content standards at grades four and five, 100 teachers will be directly involved in professional development activities over the 2006-2007 school year.  Roxanne Miller, Education Director of the STAR Institute and Asst. Professor of Science Education at Chapman, will be the lead external evaluator for teacher content knowledge for the grant; Frank Frisch, Science Director of the STAR Institute and Professor of Biological Sciences in the Wilkinson College of Letters and Science at Chapman, will be serving as the Principal Investigator for the project's science-content oriented activities.  Chapman science faculty will assist teachers in learning about physical and earth science topics at grades four and five as a part of this project.

STAR Institute at Chapman University receives $150K Edison Foundation Award to establish Science Instructional Materials Center

December 2005 - The Science Teaching and Research (STAR) Institute, directed by Professor Miller in Chapman's School of Education, received a $150,000 grant from the Edison International Foundation to establish the first Science Instructional Materials Center (SIMC) dedicated to durable science teaching equipment and technology clearinghouse in Orange County.  Through this award, teachers in OC public schools will be provided with training in various hands-on science equipment such as probeware, videomicroscopes, and electronic balances, and then be able to check-out this equipment from the SIMC and use it in their classrooms.  Principals and teachers have enthusiastically endorsed this project, as it addresses the needs of schools that normally cannot acquire such durable equipment and technology due to its cost.  All teachers and students participating in the SIMC will evaluate the effectiveness of using the equipment toward enhancing science instruction and student learning, and share their results with the public.  For more information, contact rgmiller@chapman.edu

bulletRWC Project Information Sheet

During her appointment as Postdoctoral Scholar at the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Riverside, Dr. Miller was the Co-Principal Investigator for the Reading and Writing About Science Project.  This IERI funded grant project focused on the concept of a "reading- writing connection" as a means to enhance student ability to search out and select scientific information from text sources, to analyze the information using rhetorical structures, and to transform and synthesize the information into high quality expository writing.  Links from publications, recent papers, and presentations are available on the Papers/Presentations page.
